Antarctic travellers stranded in ice off hobart

Updated

Two New Zealand-bound polar explorers say they are stranded on a remote beach in Antarctica because of a massive sea ice storm.

The Antarctic explorers left Kjartansson beach on Friday night for a weekend vacation with a crew of up to 45 people.

Their boat is stuck in a huge sea ice chasm where its propeller blades have been crushed to the point where they have to operate manually with only hand brakes and the ability to see or hear around them.

It’s not clear how the crew managed to survive.

One of the two tourists was a doctor from New Zealand, and her husband is an engineer from China.

Their son, who is three, is in Antarctica. He and his parents are from the UK.

In the meantime, the family is relying on the assistance of friends from all over the world.

“I hope that the ice is gone, and we’re going to land as planned,” Mr Karnez said.

“That was a terrible idea.”

Two people have been on a medical mission to reach their boat safely, but two more people will follow soon.

The ice around the Chalk of Life helicopter has been retreating faster than anticipated because of strong storms forecas룰렛ted for tonight and into next week.

The ice is expected to melt by Saturday.

But in the meantime, it would be a challenge to reach the helicopter by boat if the area were hit with another large sea ice storm.

The pilot of the helicopter has an alert issued for the area and said “at this time there will only be some time for chopp바카라ers to go to the site” if there is another large storm to clear.

“We’ve been advised that if there is another storm of the same extent and strength that we won’t get out,” he said.

The helicopter is expected to land by Saturday morning with about 20 people who are from Europe and China.

The Chalk of Life will continue to provide information, but the plane will be departing at 10:30am tomorrow.
