Dr. Thomas Hodge, chief of infectious diseases at the University of New South Wales Hospital, said the number of people admitted to the hospital was rising steadily.

“We suspect it’s a combination of factors, and one of the factors is they’re infected with some kind of viral type of disease that can cause pneumonia,” he said.
He says the last time a case like this had been reported in Australia was in 2001, when a man died from complications from pneumonia after having surgery for a broken leg.
“We’re looking at it as a very unusual case in terms of the circumstances surrounding it,” Dr Hodge said.
The hospital has issued an Amber Alert for anyone who may have seen a person with a “high fever” and or bleeding, or the appearance of something unusual.
In a statement the Health Department said the Amber Alert was issued to anyone who was concerned about someone with a low temperature or “bloody fluid in a person’s mouth”.

The department says people with a history of infection or serious medical conditions are more likely to have symptoms after being ill.
