Aussies continue strong start after golden night in the pool
THE golden moments of the U.S. Open are back in Australia.
With a score of 67-69 in the fifth set on the Australian court, Andy Roddick gave John Isner’s team an early 4-0 lead into the 6th to get the better of No. 13 Tomas Berdych in fr강원안마ont of a crowd of 41,531 fans at Adelaide Oval on Friday.
“I’m proud of these guys. They took a good first set and went on and worked their tail off,” Roddick told The Associated Press. “It’s great to win a major, but it was even better when we went down 2-1 to some guys with a chance to win it.”
But two of five men advancing through Friday’s qualifying tie — Kevin Kisner and Nick Kyrgios — took turns beating Roddick to finish the match, one of the most close games in professional tennis history.

The U.S. team finished with a 64-54 tie and a lead of just four points, but came closer on two more occasions in the third and fourth sets — as Roddick made an early shot to give the U.S. an early 3-1 lead into the seventh — and the score remained tied until the 9th.
U.S. coach John Isner has an immediate priority in his post-match speech, one he will likely give to the players, he said.
“With one of the best players on the planet in that situation, we’ve got to be going to bat. If we want to win the match we’ve got to start going out there and try to fight,” Isner said after the match. “To win like they did is a major credit to them. If that’s what makes those guys hungry to win, then I’d really like that to be my biggest thing.
“As a coaching staff, as a group, as a country, all we want to do is win and be the best we can be. We don’t want to be the best. That’s really one of our biggest responsibilities.”
